The original congregation K.K. Neveh Shalom was
formed in Spanish Town Jamaica after the great earthquake
destroyed Port Royal on June 6, 1692. The synagogue was built
and finished in 1704 shortly after the Bevis Marks synagogue in
east London, England. The building was destroyed on January 14,
1907 by an earthquake. The Institute has been created to
undertake the archaeological excavations and possible recreation
of this site.
