SYNAGOGUES
IN CORSICA, FRANCE:
Jewish settlement dates back to the
end of the 19th century. There are some 200 Jews in
Corsica divided between Bastia and
Ajaccio. The only synagogue is in
Bastia.

Bastia was founded in 1378 when the Genoese governor Leonello
Lomellini left the castle Biguglia to move into a fortress "Bastia"
on the edge of the Mediterranean.
The site commanded a marine fishermen then called Porto Cardo,
"the current Old Port.
It's just a stone's throw of it, (Street Castagno) has been
built by the Jewish community, synagogue Beth Meir. |
