The former synagogue building is a
Messianic Congregation, as of June 13, 2020. New dedication by the
Messianic Beth El Temple Fellowship. They call it a
synagogue. Read
here! . The building was originally, a convent, hospital
and a Catholic school. Built in 1860. See
building's history.
In 1875, the residence was sold to The
Hebrew Sinai congregation. Rabbi Aaron Shhler and his
congregants built an adjoining synagogue on the property in
1876, which served the Jewish Community until the early
1950's. The Jewish Community was no longer in
Jefferson, and they decided to rent in for secular purposes.
In 1966, the building was sold to the Jessie Allen Wise Garden
Club. The home was dedicated in 1970 as the Ruth Lester
Memorial in memory of Ruth Graham Lester, and was known until
the new dedication on June 13, 2020, as the
Jefferson Playhouse. Now it is a Messianic
Congregation.
Louis Goldberg was one of the
founders of Sinai Hebrew Congregation. Louis Goldberg died in
1899 in Jefferson, Texas. He is buried in the Mt. Sinai
Cemetery with his family in the
Goldberg Mausoleum.
The Sinai Hebrew Congregation is landmarked,
as the
Jefferson's Playhouse. See a list of
