Hempstead is a city in
United States. The community,
located at the junctions of
U.S. Highway 290,
Texas State Highway 6, and
Texas State Highway 159, is around
fifty miles northwest of
Downtown Houston. The population
was 4,691 at the 2000 census. It is the
county seat of

census of 2000, there were 4,691
people, 1,663 households, and 1,124 families residing in the city.

Until February 2009 the Lawrence Marshall car
dealership was Hempstead's largest employer. The sudden closure of
the dealership lead the city to reconsider capital projects such as
sewer upgrades and park beautification.
