About Beth El synagogue in
Casablanca: Casablanca has a strong Jewish community with many
synagogues. Beth-El Synagogue is one of the largest and most beautiful
noted for its stained glass windows, in the style of Marc Chagall.
Sunlight, tinted by stained glass, bounces off a gigantic crystal
chandelier creating thousands of shimmering rainbow mosaics on every
surface. The ark, the most important thing in the synagogue, houses the
Hebrew scrolls and these are dressed in exquisitely embroidered velvet
mantles. The walls are inscribed with gilded quotes from the Bible and
the ceiling is equally decorative. To visit the synagogue write to Beth

about Beth El:
I am
told there are a total of 17 synagogues in Casablanca although they
might not all be operational. Beth El is close (walking distance) to a
handful of smaller synagogues and by far is the biggest and the most
beautiful one of all. Apparently you needed a reservation to attend the
services years ago however it was only about 15% - 20% full ( 120 people
) during the Yom Kippur services, what a shame. A few more people showed
up in the afternoon (Yom Kippur) as the Governor of the Casablanca and
his entourage showed up for a photo op along with the U.S. Ambassador to
Morocco who happens to be Jewish. This synagogue is a MUST see, along
with the handful of other ones within a walking distance. I highly
recommend visiting at least a couple of other small ones very close by
to get a feel for the history and possibly a couple of pix. Beth El is
guarded by local police. You might have to donate a couple of dollars!
