There is a Halacha
Shulchan Aruch that one should prepare for
Rosh Hashanah by bathing oneself, dressing
in white and by preparing good food and so
One may ask how
this is possible.
We all know that
Rosh Hashanah is a very holy day and serious
We know that this
is the day when Hashem judges the world.
Rosh Hashanah is
the day when it is decided who will live and
who will not live, who will be rich and who
will be poor and so on.
Perhaps we should
not be so overly excited to prepare the best
It would seem more appropriate to
fast and cry to Hashem to forgive us for our
sins and to grant us grace and mercy. To
beseech Hashem and ask that regardless of
what was in the past, Hashem in his infinite
kindness should inscribe us all in the book
of life health and prosperity.
The answer to this question
is given in this very Halacha. The Tur
writes that the reason for all these things
is because we are absolutely sure that
Hashem will perform a miracle and he will
find the entire Jewish nation in general and
each and every Jew individually not guilty
and he will give them all a healthy and
happy sweet new year.
So then the question becomes,
what’s left for us to do on Rosh Hashanah?
The answer is
that there is a very important element of
Rosh Hashanah which is sometime overlooked
and not given the appropriate attention.
Rosh Hashanah first and foremost
is the day when
we ask Hashem to be our king. To be king
over the whole world.
Torah teaches us
that every year on Rosh Hashanah eve the
desire that Hashem has to be king over the
world returns to its source and at that time
the world is only left with a minute bit of
The service of the day
for Rosh Hashanah
is to submit yourself to Hashem with all
your heart and all your soul and most
important of all with total sincerity and
full of joy.
This, we are told by Hashem
can cause a tremendous amount of pleasure
above and result in Hashem accepting our
plea for him to be our king.
I would like to bless you
as we approach Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
that this year Rosh Hashanah will me the
most beautiful experience for you and that
Hashem will answer all your prayers for a
sweet year in all matters spiritual and
