IN FRANCE II
has been over two weeks. Two weeks of
uncertainty and instability for the Jewish community in France.
The good news is that the original fears of this turning in to a
Jewish issue have not materialized.
The situation here in France
is far from normal. While the press is reporting that things are
quieting down, there is still no end in sight. Over four
thousand cars have been set afire in the streets of France since
the "calm" was reported.
As I wrote last week, violence
and rioting of this magnitude hasn't been seen here in many years.
The government was forced to declare a state-of-emergency Tuesday,
empowering local authorities to invoke exceptional security
measures such as curfews, if deemed necessary.
Major cities such as Paris and
Lyon have been severely restricted. In Lyon, children under 18
cannot be out after 10 PM unless accompanied by an adult.
I was told by a deputy in the
French parliament that there is a majority in the parliament that
has asked President Chirac to seriously rethink the governments
position on dealing with the unrest. He alluded to a major push by
himself and several of his fellow deputies to set up a commission
to deal with the cause and the realities of the present situation.
For the moment, the Prime
Minister, Mr. De Villepin, has announced that he is reinstating
funding for all government programs that had their budgets lowered
or cut since 2001. Needless to say, this is tandem to the
government relenting in the face of violence and
unlawfulness. What kind of message will that send to the rioters?
What kind of message will that send to regular law-abiding folk
who are being victimized by the rioters.
Recent discoveries have shown
that the rioters are well-organized as well. Who knows where they
are receiving direction from? One can only shudder when thinking
It is our hope that the government
take serious steps to stop the rioting and unlawfulness
that now rule the streets of France. We pray to G-d that
the Jewish community be spared and our families remain safe from
