Benfeld
Bas-Rhin dist. The Jewish presence dates from the mid-14th century. The
community disppeared due to expulsions; it was renewed in 1830. The
Jewish population of Benfeld was 236 in 1836. The synagogue was
inaugurated in 1846. The community numbered 171 members in 1936. During
the occupation, all were expelled to the south of France, with the rest
of Alsace-Lorraine Jews. Altogether, the Germans deported 31 Benfeld
Jews. The synagogue and cemetery were severely damaged. In 1968, the
community numbered 75 persons.
